Loft conversions, garden studios, mews houses — designed by neighbours
On the statute book

Imagine what
your street
could look like

An exciting new way to get the most out of your property — extend or improve your property with loft conversions, garden studios, or mews houses. Help with the housing crisis and make more space for your family in the process.

The case for street votes

Why street votes?

01

Get more space for your family

Street votes let you extend your home — loft conversions, garden studios, mews houses, or modest extensions. More space for you and your family.

02

Help with the housing crisis

Street votes allow more homes in the same space, helping ease the UK’s severe housing shortage.

03

Build a better street

Street votes let neighbours set strict design rules together. New development is high quality and makes the street better.

How street votes work

  1. 01

    Draw up a street plan

Work with your neighbours, perhaps with a local architect, to design what development is allowed on your street. The plan sets out exactly what can be built and how it should look.

  2. 02

    Propose and vote

Once enough neighbours approve, a vote is held. If over 60% vote yes, the plan is adopted and everyone on the street has planning permission to develop in line with it.

  3. 03

    Decide what to do

You’re in complete control — including after the vote passes. Use the permission yourself, sell your property, or just wait until you feel ready.
