Who we are

This website and the street votes campaign are operated by YIMBY Alliance, a campaign organisation advocating for street votes policy. YIMBY Alliance is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. Our website address is https://streetvotes.org.uk. (Sign-up forms may appear under the “street votes” name — this is our campaign, and YIMBY Alliance remains the controller.)

What data we collect

Sign-up form

When you sign up to support the campaign, we collect your first name, last name, email address, and postcode. We use this information to:

  • Send you updates about the street votes campaign
  • Demonstrate aggregate demand for street votes to Government. We will never sell your data or share it for third parties’ marketing; we only report aggregated information.

We process your personal data on the basis of your consent to send you campaign updates by email. You give this consent when you sign up and can withdraw it at any time (see “Your rights under UK GDPR”). The analytics and advertising tools described below also run on your consent, which you give through the cookie banner. Where we show aggregated, anonymised demand to Government, that information no longer identifies you and is not personal data.

How we collect your data

You can sign up to support the campaign in one of two ways, and how your data is collected differs between them:

  • Our website form. When you fill in the sign-up form on streetvotes.org.uk, your details are collected directly by us through our website. The analytics and advertising tools described below (“Website analytics and advertising”) may apply to this route.
  • Instant Forms on Facebook and Instagram. You can also sign up through a form hosted directly within Facebook or Instagram (Meta’s “Instant Forms”). If you use one of these forms, we will store your data via Meta and Mailchimp.

Cookies

We use a first-party cookie (sv_cookie_consent) to record your cookie preferences. If you accept cookies, we also load the Meta (Facebook) Pixel to measure how people find and use this site. We do not use any other third-party cookies.

How we store your data

When you sign up, your details are stored in Mailchimp, which acts as our data processor. If you sign up through a form on our Facebook or Instagram pages, your details are also collected and stored by Meta, which processes this data as a separate data controller under its own privacy policy. Both Mailchimp and Meta are based in the United States, so signing up involves a transfer of your personal data outside the UK. These transfers are made under the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (the “UK-US Data Bridge”) where the recipient participates in it, and otherwise under the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, as required under UK GDPR. We do not sell or rent your personal data, and we do not share it with any third party for that third party’s own marketing purposes. You can ask us for more detail on, or a copy of, these safeguards using the contact details below.

Your rights under UK GDPR

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Withdraw consent at any time
  • Object to processing of your data
  • Request restriction of our processing of your data
  • Request portability of your data
  • Lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)

Consent

When you sign up, whether through our website form or an Instant Form, you consent to receive email updates from us. We record the time and source of your consent. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any of our emails or by contacting us at team@yimbyalliance.org.

Website analytics and advertising

When you sign up through our website, we share some information with Meta (Facebook and Instagram’s parent company) to measure how well our advertising is working — for example, to see whether people who sign up came from one of our ads. The information we share includes your email address in a disguised form, which Meta can match against its own users. This is still your personal data, even in disguised form. You can control this kind of tracking through the cookie preferences on this site and through your privacy settings on Facebook and Instagram, and you can read more in Meta’s Privacy Policy at https://www.facebook.com/privacy/policy.

UTM parameters

We use UTM parameters in advertising links to our website to understand which campaigns bring visitors to our site. These parameters are stored temporarily in your browser session and are not shared with third parties.

We may use aggregated, anonymised postcode data (not individual data) to demonstrate geographic demand for street votes to government and media.

Data retention

We retain your data for as long as the campaign is active and review at least once a year whether we still need it, after which we delete data we no longer need, or delete it sooner if you request deletion.
